About us
Yaguars Sports and Social Club (YSSC) focuses on using sports and cultural activities as tools for fostering cohesiveness and integration into Canadian values and identity. Our primary participants are residents of the Niagara Region, including newcomers, visible minorities, Canadian-born individuals, first-generation Canadians, those who have experienced marginalization or isolation, and individuals facing mental health challenges.
Yaguars Sports and Social Club values the uniqueness of its members and recognizes their contributions to Canadian society. Our activities—whether sports, social, recreational, or cultural—serve as a bridge between Canadian values and the cultural backgrounds of our participants. Yaguars provides opportunities for members to immerse themselves in Canadian society, promoting healthier and more inclusive communities throughout the Niagara Region.
The name “Yaguars” honors the jaguar, America’s largest cat, found from the southern United States to northern Argentina. The word comes from yaguara, a Tupi-Guarani word from South America, popularly translated as “he who kills with one leap”. Indigenous cultures across the Americas revered the jaguar. The Maya called it b’alam and linked it to the night sun and the underworld, and the Aztec called it ocelotl.
